Published for the Lexington Minuteman on Sept. 14.
The Capt. John Parker statue and the Minuteman Monument on the Lexington Battle Green will receive a cleaning and polishing after Patriots’ Day 2017.
“[The statue] protects itself like a copper roof,” said Michael Evans, a resident and metallurgist whose recommendations the Board of Selectmen adopted during a meeting on Sept. 12.
For months residents, experts and government officials debated over the type of restoration technique to be used on the Parker statue, which sits at the corner of the Battle Green on Massachusetts Avenue and the Minuteman Monument, which is located next to Buckman Tavern honoring the men who served in the Lexington militia on April 19, 1775.
Evans’ suggested method, which the board approved unanimously, was to apply a chemical to accelerate the natural oxidation process of the statue. This would allow the statue to preserve itself.
